Looks for Life in America – Project Statement

Looks for Life in America is a project born out of my simultaneous obsession and frustration with Instagram and social media culture in recent years. Since my adolescence, I have experienced a kind of life on the internet. The unique humor and aesthetics of strange corners of the web inform all my work. However, with this particular series, I hope to push forward my frustration towards the superficial ‘wokeness’, misinformation, and escapism in regards to politics that exists in social media. Through satire portraits of the very millennial group I belong to, I want to push individuals to take their activism and opinions off screens and into their communities.

This project aims to produce 4 large paintings as well as 2 limited edition t-shirts. The paintings will be on display as they are completed, having the ability to be critiqued even while I am not present in the studio, through the means of window stickers. The shirts will be displayed during the final exhibition of the project, and will be available for sale with all of the proceeds being given to Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates & Loop It Up Savannah.

About the Artist:

I’m an artist living and working in Savannah, GA. My work is informed by adolescence that experienced the odd and embarrassing birth of social media. Illustrations are my way of understanding my warped sense of humor, as well as my curiosity about how femininity exists and subverts itself in the digital age. I am a mother to two cats, a connoisseur of tea, and a chronic to-do list maker.
