July First Friday Festivities!

It's that time again -- brave the heat and see some awesome art this First Friday!

ON::VIEW Artist in Residency -- Artist Becky Slivinsky has been working on her on-going project "Objet de Desir" during the month of June in her Residency. Slivinsky questions an ideal standard of beauty that is forced upon women within western culture in searching for the correlation between unrealistic beauty expectations and the ways in which women are portrayed in the media. She explores this by purchasing magazines that can be found in common places, searches for images of women displayed in different ways, and ultimately alters the image by gesturally applying, pouring, spraying and wiping cleaning products across the image in an attempt to force the viewer to examine the way women are seen in the world and ultimately subverting the meaning of the original image. Small prints, t-shirts, and posters by the artist will be for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates.

On display in the gallery: "Neighborhoods - A Sulfur Studios Members Only Exhibition." Artist Members were prompted: What makes your neighborhood great? What are its challenges? How is it changing? For the better, for worse and for whom? Artists offer a unique perspective on their environments and can highlight issues and recognize benefits that may be missing from our current dialogue. Featuring: Mia MerlinHeather MacRae, Margaret Froelicher, Jeffrey Hicks, Becky Slivinsky, Jia Zeng, John Schmidt, Marsha Lieberman, Emily Earl, Michelle Perez, Anya MitchellMolly HaydenAlexis Javier and Jennylyn Pawelski
