ON::VIEW Open Studio with Marisa Lilje

Swing by every Saturday from noon - 5PM during Marisa’s stay at ON::VIEW Artist Residency to say hello and check out her progress on her project. Visit our Residency page for other important dates!

Project Description

As an artist I task myself with observing the natural world and am primarily interested in representing the human form in charcoal and oil paint so that the viewer finds something beautiful in the subject. During the ON::VIEW Residency, a variety of live models will be present as I draw or paint their portraits. People will get a glimpse into an observational artist’s studio. With models present you can see how the interaction between artist and subject affects the work. Charcoal drawings and oil painting of portraiture and still life will be made during the length of the residency.

About the Artist:

Born and raised in NW Ohio, Marisa was always interested in the visual arts and studied printmaking and drawing at Bowling Green State University, just 30 minutes south of her hometown of Toledo. With a focus on figurative art, she received her masters degree in drawing the New York Academy of Art, NYC, in 2004.  While in New York she met her future husband and started a family, moving through Washington, DC to eventually settle in Savannah over 12 years ago. Constantly in search of beauty and an effective way to relay that on the page, Marisa has been drawing portraits and figures consistently, exhibiting her work regionally and completing commissions both locally and nationally. One recent commission is a reclining nude hanging in La Scala Ristorante in Savannah. During the summers of 2018 and 2019 she spent time in Europe with her family traveling to some of the world’s best museums in Florence, Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, and Vienna. These trips solidified her belief that portraiture is some of the most beautiful work that exists today. With that in mind, just this past summer she spent time at Studio Escalier in an intensive painting program and has been oil painting ever since her return. The work reflects a deep appreciation of the human form and the variety of the individual.
