Piecing Starland (Queer) – Project Statement

My intention with this residency is to create a small body of work that is regionally specific to the Starland neighborhood. As an artist who uses found and thrifted objects, media, and textiles in combination with handmade materials I try to make work that creates new possibilities of interpretation and experience through material decontextualization and re-assemblage. Historically, queers and queer communities create new identities, new families, and new realities out of what is available to us. My work and methods in the studio echo these models. Using materials that have been procured from second hand stores and from personal collections in combination with disrupted versions of traditional craft techniques, my hope is that you can see some of our stories, disrupting the repeat patterns of heteronormativity.

To further the connection to the neighborhood I would like to call on neighborhood residents for the donation of unwanted textiles. Donations can be dropped off anytime the studio is open or you are welcome to stop by during my open hours every Friday (noon-5pm) during my residency period.

About the Artist:

Joseph spent his childhood in the southern United States daydreaming about pop stars and male teenage heartthrobs. His adolescence in the Midwest was spent experimenting with make up, vintage clothing, shoplifting, and skipping school. After becoming an adult he realized the real world had very little to offer so he returned to school to earn his BFA in the hopes of living his dream of being an artist. He now resides in Savannah, Georgia where he is creating new work and thinking about where he will earn his MFA.
