September First Friday Festivities!

Join us on Friday, September 6th from 6 – 9PM for a fully loaded evening of open artist studios, the group photography exhibition, "Every Third Wednesday," on display in the gallery, the final viewing of Artist Resident Joseph Malson’s site-specific project "Piecing Starland (Queer)," and the Sulfur Studios Street Fair with Prowl food truck!

On display in the Gallery: "Every Third Wednesday" features the work of ten photographers from the Photo Group Critique that takes place every month at Sulfur Studios. "Every Third Wednesday" is on display from September 5th – 14th 2019, and may be seen during Sulfur Studios’ regular business hours.

ON::VIEW Artist Residency: "Piecing Starland (Queer)" by Joseph Malson. Joseph has spent his residency period creating a small body of work that is regionally specific to the Starland neighborhood. As an artist who uses found and thrifted objects, media, and textiles in combination with handmade materials, he makes work that creates new possibilities of interpretation and experience through material decontextualization and re-assemblage. From his statement: “Historically, queers and queer communities create new identities, new families, and new realities out of what is available to us. My work and methods in the studio echo these models. Using materials that have been procured from second hand stores and from personal collections in combination with disrupted versions of traditional craft techniques, my hope is that you can see some of our stories, disrupting the repeat patterns of heteronormativity.”

Open Artist Studios: As usual during First Fridays in Starland, the public is invited to tour our studios and meet the artists working here. People are encouraged to step into each open artist space, ask questions to learn about the artists and their processes, and purchase any work that may be for sale.

Sulfur Studios Street Fair: Located on 39th Street, between Bull Street and Desoto Avenue. The Sulfur Studios Street Fair will take place every month during First Fridays in Starland, highlighting different vendors, food truck and artists!
