On::View Artist in Residency
Project based residency opportunity in Savannah's Starland district.
On::View Artist in Resident Program
Applications are now closed for Summer/Fall 2019. We will begin accepting application for Fall/Winter 2019 in early June.
Summer/Fall residency dates:
July 9th - August 4th
August 13 - September 8th
September 10th - October 6th
NEW this Session: Thanks to a generous grant from Meowwolf one selected resident will receive a $500.00 stipend to use for travel, lodging or materials and supplies.
Our ON::VIEW residency provides a free, high visibility studio space for an artist to complete a four week project.
Located just inside the lobby of Sulfur Studios, the residency space is 12 x 14 feet, with built-in movable walls and shelving, which can be closed off and locked when the resident is not in. The residency studio has large, street level, east facing windows, which will allow the community to view residents’ work outside of public open hours. Artists may work in any medium suitable to the space. Successful applicants will propose a project that will engage the community over the course of the residency period. Artists will have multiple opportunities to meet and connect with the local art community over the course of the residency.
The residency space has open air flow into the lobby and gallery area which makes the following restrictions necessary:
-No aerosol or other toxic/high-voc materials are allowed in the space.
-No ongoing or repetitive loud noises, such as grinding. Occasional use of hand and power tools IS allowed.

Nitty Gritty Details:
- Residents will have 24 hour access to the space but must also commit to working in their studio during our public open hours from noon to 5pm on Friday OR Saturday, and must be open to talking to visitors about their concepts and process.
-Residents must be present during the First Friday Open Studios which will fall near the end of their residency (see specific dates below).
-Residents are encouraged to engage the community by giving a public lecture or workshop, or other interactive event.
-The residency space is climate controlled, but due to its proximity to the doors and the large windows it can be warmer/cooler than the rest of the space depending on outside temperature.
-Limited furnishings are available, but accepted applicants must supply their own materials and supplies.
-Sulfur Studios does not insure the property of the artist in resident. Limited locking storage will be provided.
-Current Studio members or artists who have rented a studio at Sulfur Studios in the last 6 months are not eligible for this residency.
-Collaborative teams are eligible for the residency. One proposal should be submitted for the entire team.
-Artists coming from out of town must cover their own housing and travel costs unless they are selected to receive a stipend.
- Artists may seek additional support or funding from other organizations to cover project costs if they wish. Sulfur Studios will be happy to provide a letter of support to accepted residents seeking grant or other funding sources.
Applications will be judged on overall quality of work, and the level of community engagement afforded by the proposed project.
