Supporter Gallery: "Same as It Ever Was"

For this ARTS Southeast Supporter Call for Entry exhibition, artists were asked to take stock of where they find themselves creatively, tracing their own evolution to unpack what keeps them coming back to the studio today, and where it might lead them tomorrow. Through diverse approaches and media – including fibers, ceramics, photography, metalwork, collage, mixed media, and more – they shared signature pieces emblematic of their persistent interests. Longtime Supporter and ON::View Residency Committee member Jackie Black shares two photographs spanning three decades, with accompanying handwritten thoughts. New Supporter Oliver Smith blurs the familiar and the bizarre in his photographic collaborations with AI. Studio member Faran Riley delves into the surprising detail of her nocturnal scenes. Same as It Ever Was invites us to examine the old through the lens of the new, and vice versa.

FEATURED ARTISTS: Jackie Black, Emma Camps, Tara Conway, Cat Counihan, Joseph Cowart, Joy Dunigan, Josh Gary, Jeff Hicks, Sheryl St. Germain, Joan Clare Mazzeo, Lila Miller, Melanie Mills, Faran Riley, Jess Smith, Oliver Smith

  • Green Truck Neighborhood Pub (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

About the Artist:

Rebecca Braziel was born in Savannah, Georgia and went on to receive a BFA in Fibers from The Savannah College of Art and Design in 2008. She spent many years in Houston where she completed a six-month artist residency program at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, was awarded the Houston Individual Artist Grant, and held the position of teaching artist at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Her work was exhibited at venues including Lawndale Art Center, Galveston Arts Center, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.

In 2020 Braziel returned to Savannah and has since completed the Arts Southeast ON:VIEW Residency, acts as Alumni Mentor for the SCAD FIbers Department, works as Community Artist Educator for the SCAD MOA, established Studio 10 Project Space, and was included in the SCAD deFINE Art 2023 exhibition, Protégé. Braziel maintains a studio at Sulfur Studios from which she designs and carries out interactive art experiences engaging the community, an effort recently awarded the Starlandia Foundation Community Grant in 2024.

Artist Statement:

Rebecca Braziel focuses on process and material as wayfinding tools to discover the conceptual underpinnings within her practice. In Braziel’s current body of work she honors the importance of the river to the life and spirit of the local community while looking deeply into the status of that relationship. Referencing the changing of the tides and the treasures they reveal, Braziel will slowly alter the piece over a two month span. By bringing this evolving project to the Art Box, Braziel invites conversation around the meaning inherent in the acquisition and display of art objects.

Artist Talk & Walk: Wednesday, May 22nd, 2024, 6 - 8PM

(Presentation at ARTS Southeast (2301 Bull St), Followed by a walk to Green Truck Pub)

Kiara Gilbert in the ON::View Residency

to May 3

Kiara Gilbert in the ON::View Residency

About the Artist: Kiara Gilbert (Atlanta, GA)

Kiara Gilbert (they/them) explores how emotional landscapes are shaped and perceptions of history are misinformed by colonized narratives surrounding the past. Growing up black and queer in the South has given them a reverence for the culture and beliefs that enslaved people cultivated and the desire to center black diasporic perspectives in their life and work. Through the use of print media and sculptural installations, they create scenes that speak on feelings of frustration, love, listlessness, and ancestral loss. Gilbert has been a recipient of the Six Creative Grant, the Janice Hartwell Award in Printmaking, a 2019 participant in the Humanity in Action Berlin Fellowship, a Mint Leap Year Fellow from 2022-2023, and are currently a South Fulton Arts Partner Program Participant.

About the Project:

“As a black queer southerner, understanding the varied ways queer people have existed both above, and below ground for centuries is integral to my practice. Savannah provides an exceptionally fertile ground for this study because so many contemporary black, queer social practices are a product of, or in direct retaliation to the slave trade and Reconstruction Period that has shaped and marred Savannah.” — Kiara Gilbert

During their Residency, Kiara will expand on a body of work that centers their research on queer lineage and the non-normative ways it manifests through communal spaces and experiences. Combining sculpture with printmaking through dimensional forms and papier maché, they will activate the studio windows with rotating works that can be experienced in the round. Gilbert will also conduct research on black, queer history of Savannah and its impacts on the scene today. This research will entail accessing the archives at the Kaye Kole Local History & Genealogy Room in the Bull Street Branch Library, engaging with other queer artists through workshops and studio visits, and existing in the local queer community. While much of their work deals with the darker or more secretive side of queer history, Kiara will use their time in the Residency to incorporate historical queer joy and celebration.

Main Gallery: Gabrielle Torres: "Wilton Street Rhythm"

About the Artist

Gabrielle Torres was born in Philadelphia, PA, raised in Sumter, SC and currently resides in Savannah, GA, where she is a professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design. She earned her BS in Visual Arts from Lander University in 2012, and her MFA in Painting from SCAD in 2021.

Torres was recently featured in the Savannah Morning News and Savannah Now Magazine as Artist of the Month, April Edition. The following month, she was the 912 Featured Artist. Her work has been exhibited in solo shows at Savannah State and in Hampton, SC. She was the ON::View Artist-in-Residence at Sulfur Studios in August 2022. Torres has had the privilege of working for the celebrated artist Suzanne Jackson, from whom she gains much inspiration. Currently, her focus is to continue to use her platform in the arts to create a conversation and use site-specific relational art to form a bond with specific audiences she would like to reach.

Artist Statement

Wilton Street Rhythm is an intricately woven collection conjured from the design elements produced in the rhythmic and poetic highs and lows of Miles Davis. Specifically, it focuses on using color, shape, line, movement, rhythm, and tension. This series of loom paintings tastefully guides the senses through the emotions inspired by Bitches Brew, So What, Miles Ahead, and much more. Each piece is precisely paired with a song using the elements and principles of art to

articulate the raw emotions of the times.

Wilton Street Rhythm starts at the beginning; the premise: before one can walk, one must learn to crawl. This is what Wilton Street is for me, the beginning of my artistic infatuation. I, like many, resort back to an origin for grounding, to a time when the worries of the world ceased to run rampant and pollute my mind. This is a safe space; the rhythm of making deserves a safe space. Miles Davis does this for me.”

Caitlin McDonagh in the ON::View Residency

About the Artist

Caitlin McDonagh is a visual artist and muralist who creates intricate illustrative works inspired by folklore, symbolism, and the balancing of the human vs. natural world. The themes of connection, self-cultivation, growth, loss, and renewal are woven into the worlds that she creates. Her goal with her work is to build her own folklore; work that leaves doors open within it, allowing the viewer to add to the stories, create their own imagined landscapes, and find parts of themselves within this imagery.

You can find Caitlin’s mural work across Canada and the US. Her paintings are part of the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection at the Burnaby Art Gallery and part of numerous private collections worldwide.

About the Project

During her time in Savannah, Caitlin will be creating a series of works on paper that are directly influenced by the local architectural and natural landscapes, as well as her time spent at the ON::VIEW Residency. While in Residence, Caitlin will have open studio hours where members of the community can come by and contribute to a collaborative community art piece, which will be continually in process during the month-long Residency. The end of the Residency will culminate in an exhibition of the works at Cleo the Gallery (915 B Montgomery St, Savannah GA), alongside a mural installation in the gallery. There will also be a Project Finale at ARTS Southeast on Friday, February 2nd from 5 - 9PM  in conjunction with First Fridays in Starland.

ON::View Residency: Timothy Short

Timothy Short is a narrative painter who focuses on building imaginative, atmospheric works centering the Black figure. He was born in Columbus, Georgia in 1993 where he developed an early passion and practice in visual world-building and constructing narrative. Upon moving to Atlanta in 2011, Timothy pursued painting and drawing at Georgia State University. He obtained a BFA in Visual Art and Design and a minor degree in African American Studies in 2015. He currently resides in Stone Mountain, GA, working out of his studio space at Echo Contemporary Gallery in Atlanta.

“During my residency stay, I will continue building on two pre-existing bodies of work - one titled For Da Folks and the other, not yet titled. These bodies of work consist of oil-based paintings and graphite and charcoal drawings of varying sizes. For Da Folks is a collection of works that highlights intimate moments between me and my family members – the chosen subjects of the works. This portraiture interrogates my connection to Blackness by examining the cultural artifacts and happenings in occurrence whenever my family gathers….The second body of work focuses on outdoor environments occupied by Black people. I wish to focus on spaces that I have inhabited or traversed daily over lengthy periods and in doing so, built a relationship with through those experiences. I plan to focus on night vistas as the eerie darkness will submerge the viewer into the atmospheric reality of belonging to those spaces.” Read more at https://artssoutheast.org/residency2023

ON::View Residency: Alexandria P. Clay

Alexandria P. Clay is a charcoal and mixed media collage artist. She lives and works in Durham, North Carolina. Clay obtained her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2018. Raised in Raleigh, NC, her work draws upon the experiences of black women and girls living in the southern United States. She is an artist and part time educator.

During her On::View Residency, in tandem with her practice, Alexandria will encourage community members to share their methods of placemaking, and ways that they reclaim space in daily life. Through collage-based workshops, folks will be encouraged to identify the spaces that fail to support their identities, and hypothesize what changes they might make in spaces like these. Alexandria hopes through conversation and collage, we may strengthen community, amplify voices, and create more inclusive institutions in our own backyards. This exhibition features over 30 artists from around the world; from Savannah, Georgia in the Southeastern US to Ireland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Austria, Canada, Poland, Belgium, Czech Republic and South Africa. Local artist and exhibition curator Axelle Kieffer has collaborated on over 200 collages since 2019, mostly through the postal service. These art exchanges challenge the collaborating artists to interpret, expand upon, or completely change the initial ideas of what the final work will look like. During the process, a long-distance dialogue between two (or more) artists is created, where they encounter playful and surprising reactions to their contributions, pushing them out of their comfort zone. These works include imagery harvested from all sorts of ephemera: postcards, magazines, recycled images, photographs, and any material the collage artist may have on hand.
